Men's Soccer Defeats William Paterson, 3-1

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team (5-1-1, 1-0 CC) used two first half goals to down William Paterson (3-3-1) 3-1 in Wednesday night's non-conference game at Tylus Field.

In the third minute of play, the Diplomats were rewarded a free kick in the offensive area after a Pioneer foul. Philip Monos sent a cross into the box that was denied by the defense and sent back out to Monos. The midfielder sent a following crossing pass into the box that was headed by Connor Anderko to Nic Petruso who fired a shot into the net to score the games first goal. The score is the first of Petruso's career. Monos and Anderko were credited with the assist.

After William Paterson tied the game in the 17th minute, the Diplomats responded with a score off the foot of Jack Nury in the 36th minute on a corner kick. Shay Adamson sent a crossing pass in front of the net to Nury. The sophomore sent a shot that slipped through the hands of the diving Pioneer goalkeeper to sneak into the net to put F&M ahead 2-1.

The Diplomats continued attacking in the 76th minute when Matias Arbelaez stole the ball from the Pioneer defense. Arbelaez sent a shot on net that was saved, but the rebound found the foot of Michael Desmond who capitalized on the opportunity by scoring his second goal of the season to grow the F&M lead to 3-1.

The Diplomats had a chance to add on to the score in the 52nd minute when a Pioneer foul in the box presented F&M with a penalty kick. Monos took the kick and fired it on goal, but a great diving save by the Pioneers' goalkeeper kept the ball from going over the goal line.

Franklin & Marshall peppered the William Paterson net, outshooting the Pioneers 19-8.

The Diplomats face McDaniel on the road Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in their second CC game of the season.
