ARLINGTON, Va. - The Franklin & Marshall volleyball team took the victory in both of their matches against Meredith (25-14, 17-25, 25-18, 25-23) and Emory & Henry (25-18, 25-11, 25-16) on Saturday to wrap up the Marymount Invitational.
The Diplomats are now to 8-2, while the Avenging Angels fall to 5-4 and the Wasps are now 2-7.
Match 1 – F&M 3, Meredith 1 (25-14, 17-25, 25-18, 25-23)
In the opening set, the Diplomats appeared destined for a tight matchup with the Avenging Angels, opening the set with just an 8-6 advantage. F&M swiftly went on a 14-6 run to go up 22-12 en route to a 25-14 set victory.
Meredith took a commanding 17-8 lead to begin set two. F&M battled back, going on an 8-3 run to narrow the deficit to 20-16 before the Avenging Angels buckled down to take five of the final six points and clinch the set, 25-17.
The Avenging Angels hung with F&M for a while in set three, splitting the first 14 plays, 7-7. The Diplomats went on an 18-11 run to finish the set, capped by back-to-back Delaney Hahn sets to take a 2-1 set lead.
In the fourth and final set, Meredith came out hot, taking an early 10-5 lead over the Diplomats. F&M surged back to avoid a winner-take-all fifth set, finishing with a 20-13 run to take the set 25-23.
Carlita Bozzo guided the defense with a team-leading 18 digs.
Match 2 – F&M 3, Emory & Henry 0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-16)
F&M was tied 3-3 in the opening set against Emory & Henry before going on a 22-15 run that included a stretch of six straight points to take the set 15-18. A kill by Grace Polisano solidified the win in the opening set for the Diplomats.
The Diplomats rode a hot start and a big finish in set two. They opened with five straight points to take a 5-0 lead over the Wasps and finished with a 6-1 run to take the set 25-11.
The Wasps hung tight for a while with F&M in the final set. The Diplomats had just a 9-8 lead before going on a 16-8 run to wrap up the set, including a 7-1 stretch. A Nicole Carey kill clinched the set, 25-16, and completed the sweep, 3-0.
Carly Ostrowski paced the defense with 10 digs as Bozzo, Hahn, and Maggiore had seven digs apiece.
Hahn's eight kills led the offense against Emory & Henry.
F&M returns to Lancaster next Saturday, Sept. 21st, at 1:00 p.m. with the open of Centennial Conference play as Muhlenberg comes to Mayser Center.
