CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Franklin & Marshall's volleyball team swept a tri-match hosted by Washington College, first defeating the host 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-23) and then fighting past Alvernia 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-13). 

F&M improved to 15-6, 6-1 CC while Washington and Alvernia dropped to 14-8, 2-5 CC and 13-9 respectively.

The Diplomats came out quickly in the first match of the day and a kill from Caroline Elgut extended the lead 5-1. The Shorewomen were able to counter and eventually tied the set 15-15. The remainder of the set stayed close, but back-to-back service aces from Gabby Mavroidis ended the set 25-23 in the Diplomats' favor.

Washington started the second frame with the lead, extending the score to 7-3. F&M was able to force a change in momentum, and with Christine Yoo behind the service line, went on a 3-0 run to take the lead 16-14. A Barbara Kapustin kill gave F&M the second set 25-22.

A service ace from Kapustin in the third gave the Diplomats the 4-1 lead, and a kill from Shae Murphy extended the lead 10-5. F&M kept the pace with a Yoo kill bringing the score 23-17, but a late run from the Shorewomen was cut short by an error to give the Diplomats the set and match.

Sophomore Grace Polisano led the offense with eight kills and 11 digs. Grace Maggiore recorded 29 assists, six digs, and six kills. Mavroidis led with three aces and also tallied five digs.

A kill from Yoo put F&M on the board, but Alvernia started the second match strong and eventually led 19-13. A Polisano kill stopped the Golden Wolves in their tracks and started the Diplomats on a 12-0 run ending in a Kapustin kill to take the first 25-19.

F&M looked to keep the momentum, starting the second set with a service ace from Polisano, A kill from Casey Morrow brought the lead to 9-5. Alvernia was able to regain their footing and late runs helped the Golden Wolves win the second frame. 

Alvernia kept the pace in the third, quickly gaining a 9-4 lead. Back-to-back service aces from Elgut finished a 4-0 run by the Diplomats to bring the score within one at 13-12.  A Maggiore ace started F&M on another 4-0 run that would see them take the lead, 20-18. The Diplomats maintained the intensity and took advantage of Alvernia errors to take the third set.

The fourth frame started with neither team gaining more than a two-point lead. A kill from Morrow tied the score at 13-13 and started the Diplomats on a run that would extend their lead 20-16, but the Golden Wolves were able to come back to win the set 25-23 to force a fifth.

F&M came out strong to start the final set of the day, and a 6-0 run with Cassie Garison behind the line that included an ace gave the Diplomats the 6-1 lead. Alvernia tried to counter, coming within one at 11-10, but F&M remained steadfast and a kill from Polisano finished the match in F&M's favor.

Polisano kept the pace leading with both 18 kills and six service aces on the match. Maggiore was good for 45 assists, seven digs, and six kills. Morrow held her own with 10 kills and three digs. Murphy cemented the defense with 19 kills. 

The Diplomats continue CC play hosting Muhlenberg on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
