F&M Sweeps Final Day of Spring Break, Schaefer Delivers No-Hitter

CLERMONT, Fla. – Izzy Schaefer ended the day with a no-hitter to help Franklin & Marshall softball to a 2-0 sweep on the final day of Spring Break action. The Diplomats first defeated FDU-Florham in a tight 3-2 contest before blanking Lasell 9-0 on Friday afternoon.

F&M finished its opening trip with a 5-5 record on the year while FDU-Florham dropped to 5-9 and Lasell fell to 1-8.

Game 1: F&M 3, FDU-Florham 2 – (7 Innings) 

Sam Clemens topped the order, registering a single and advancing to second off a wild pitch. Erin Russell delivered a two-run homer to left field to give F&M the 2-0 lead. 

FDU got on the board in the third inning with a single up the middle to send a runner home.

The Devils evened the game in the fifth, putting a runner in scoring position after a stolen base, and an RBI single tied the game at 2-2. 

Lexi Piccinich opened the bottom of the fifth with double to right field. Sammy Burns contributed a sacrifice bunt to put Piccinich in scoring position, while Ryan Correa delivered the final blow with a single to centerfield to send Piccinich across the plate and give F&M the 3-2 lead. 

FDU looked to stay in the game in the seventh, getting runners on first and second with one out, but pitcher Katie Wenger held strong in the circle to force a foul out and fly out to keep the Diplomats' victory. 

Piccinich and Correa led the offense, both going 2-for-3 on the day while Russell notched two RBIs off one hit. 

Wenger (3-3) threw all seven innings, recording four strikeouts on the day.

Game 2: F&M 9, Lasell 0 – (5 Innings) 

The Diplomats got on the board early with an RBI double from Piccinich to drive in Clemens for the 1-0 lead.

F&M picked up two more runs in the fourth to extend its lead 3-0. First, with two outs, Christine Miles singled up centerfield to send Correa across the plate. With Ella Glenn in scoring position, Clemens registered the single RBI.

The Diplomats delivered the final blow with six runs off eight hits in the fifth inning. Burns notched the first score with a homer to centerfield to extend F&M's lead to 4-0. With two outs, Good doubled to left field to send Correa home. Miles followed with a two-RBI single to drive in Glenn and Tiara Halstead. Piccinich then plated Clemens and Miles with a double.

The Diplomats notched 13 hits on the day with both Clemens and Miles going 3-for-3. Miles and Piccinich led with three RBIs apiece.

Schaefer (3-3) tossed five innings to record the no-hitter and threw three strikeouts.
