Box Score

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Erin Coverdale's goal with 26 seconds left in regulation handed the No. 11 Franklin & Marshall field hockey team a 3-2 win over Lebanon Valley on Wednesday night.

The Diplomats improved to 3-0 on the season while the Dutchmen fell to 0-4.

After both offenses went silent in the first half, F&M came out firing to begin the third quarter. Less than 30 seconds after the intermission, Erin Coverdale took a feed from Lily Mynott and blasted her first goal of the night, and the 47th score of her career, to move into the top five in program history and give the Diplomats a 1-0 lead.

F&M did not wait long to add a second score, as Mynott found the back of the cage in the 33rd minute for her fourth goal of the year following a scrum in the middle, giving the Diplomats a 2-0 lead.

Held scoreless through the first 44 minutes of action, Lebanon Valley began a comeback. The Dutchmen knocked in a rebounded shot as the third quarter expired, and did it again in the 54th minute of action to tie the game at two with less than seven minutes left in regulation.

Lebanon Valley's defense fought off an insurgent F&M attack, saving 14 Diplomat shots in the contest. The game appeared destined for overtime after the Diplomats could not convert on a scrum in the middle with less than five minutes remaining, but the Dutchmen fouled to allow a penalty corner with 31 seconds to play.

Addie Peters inserted the penalty corner to Melisssa Gula. Gula then found an open Coverdale in the middle who blasted the ball to the top left corner of the cage to put the Diplomats ahead for good with just 26 seconds left on the clock, 3-2.

The goal was good for Coverdale's 15th career game-winner, tying the record with Sydney Cole '18 for most game-winning goals in program history.

Coverdale had nine shots on goal on the evening, scoring twice. Mynott finished with one goal and one assist.

The Diplomats make their first appearance at Tylus Field on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. F&M takes on Mary Washington in the home opener.
