NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Franklin & Marshall's women's basketball team was downed by host Smith, 54-42, in the Smith Holiday Tournament championship game on Monday. The Diplomats fell to 4-6, 2-3 CC while the Pioneers improved to 11-0.
The Smith lead expanded in the second as the pioneers held a 28-14 advantage with 5:13 left. A three pointer by D'Naisha Bellamy-Greene and a Moran jumper helped the Diplomats chip away with a 30-19 score entering the break.
The Pioneers went on a 10-5 run to open the third, leading 40-24. F&M shot 6-of-8 at the free-throw line and outscored Smith, 7-3, across the final four minutes of the quarter.
Despite outscoring the Pioneers in the final stanza, the Diplomats were unable to get back into striking distance. Moran hit a pair of field goals and Meg Navarro added a three-pointer in the comeback effort, but Smith held strong to take the 12-point victory, 54-42.
Williams poured in 12 points and corralled 14 rebounds for a double-double. Both marks led the Diplomats.
Sarosha Parsons added seven points. The senior guard was selected to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts against both Smith and Colby over the weekend.
F&M held a 33-32 rebounding advantage over the Pioneers.
The Diplomats return to Centennial Conference (CC) play on Saturday when Swarthmore comes to Lancaster for a 1:00 p.m. tilt.
