PHILADELPHIA – John Crawford and Mason Leiphart led the Division I Franklin & Marshall wrestling team at the Keystone Classic on Sunday. Crawford (197 lbs.) finished in fifth place at one of the highlights of the early DI schedule, while Leiphart (125 lbs.) took sixth in his Keystone debut. As a team, the Diplomats finished 10th in the final standings.

Crawford went 4-2 on Sunday to match his seed coming into the tournament. He recorded bonus points during three of his victories, with his only two setbacks coming against higher-seeded wrestlers. Crawford started his tournament with a 13-4 major decision to become one of four Diplomats to advance to the quarterfinals. After falling to the No. 4-seeded Cody Howard from Virginia Tech, Crawford bounced back with a fall vs. EIWA foe Drexel and 10-7 decision against Arizona State. He dropped his consolation semifinal to third-seeded Cole Urbas of Penn before the rematch with the aforementioned Hokie went to Crawford by a medical forfeit before he could try to avenge his defeat on the mat.

Leiphart entered the tournament as the seventh seed and improved on that throughout the day. The F&M first-year moved into the quarterfinals with a dominant 15-1 victory against the host Quakers before running into eventual champion Eddie Ventresca of Virginia Tech during the quarterfinal round. Leiphart come back with a 6-5 decision over George Mason before rolling up a second period tech fall of Arizona State's Tristan Mascarenos during the consolation semifinals. A matchup with top-seeded Ryan Miller of Penn who was upset in the semifinals bumped Leiphart to the fifth place match where he was edged in another 6-5 battle.

Joining the quartet of Diplomats in the quarterfinals were Gio Diaz (125 lbs.) and Pat Phillips (133 lbs.) Diaz started his day in dominant fashion with a 20-1 technical fall early in the third period of his round of 16 match, but hit the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds in his next two matchups. He dropped decisions to both of those opponents, including a 6-5 battle against third-seeded Antonio Mininno of Drexel. Phillips was also off to a great start as he won 14-0 during the opening round against Drexel's starter Jaxon Maroney. The sophomore followed that up with a 1-0 victory against Virginia Tech's Bradon Witterberg. Coming out of the wrong side of the battle of No. 4 and No. 5 seeds, Phillips finished one match shy of the medal rounds with an 8-4 match in his consolation action.

Josh Hillard (133 lbs.) picked up bonus points during his win at 133 lbs., pinning EIWA foe Ian Ratchford of Sacred Heart with 45 seconds remaining in that match. Hillard has now recorded bonus points during six of his first seven career victories. Fellow first-year Nick Alvarez (157 lbs.) picked up another EIWA victory, overcoming Penn's Hunter Gandy by a 11-6 score. Noah Fox came through with a key 5-2 decision against Duke's Conor Becker and was just mere seconds away from upsetting the No. 3 seed from George Mason before a late takedown swung the 7-6 decision against the Diplomats' junior.

Wrestling has the upcoming week away from competition over the Thanksgiving holiday. When the team does return to action, it was be the team's first dual meets on the road this season as F&M travels to VMI on Sunday, December 4 to take on both the Keydets (11 a.m.) and Duke Blue Blue Devils (1 p.m.) during their trip to Virginia.
