BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Franklin & Marshall wrestling team had four place winners at Binghamton's Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open on Sunday, adding another strong weekend to the early part of the season. No. 33 Pat Phillips continued to impress with a second-place finish to help a very strong lightweight effort. First-year Josh Hillard also placed sixth at the 133 lbs., while Gio Diaz (fourth) and Mason Leiphart (sixth) both advanced to the medal round at 125 lbs.

Phillips ran off four consecutive wins, starting his day with back-to-back pins against Navy and Buffalo. The F&M sophomore continued to control his opponents as he nearly secured bonus points during a 10-3 win against EIWA foe Tyler Kellison of the host Bearcats in the quarterfinals. Phillips did get bonus with a 15-4 major against Northern Colorado's Brady Hankin in the semifinal round before dropping an 8-3 finals match against Cornell's Ethan Fernandez.

Also placing at 133 lbs. was Hillard who rolled off three straight wins in consolation matches. All three of those victories came by bonus points as he picked up a tech fall against his own teammate before a medical forfeit and 16-6 major against a Spartan Combat RTC athlete. Drew Currier advanced to the quarterfinals at 133 lbs. following a 5-2 win against Clarion's Jack Martinec during the Round of 16.

The 125 lb. bracket was another strength for the Diplomats as Diaz, Leiphart, and Jack Bruce all represented the team in the quarterfinal round. Diaz was the highest placer for F&M at the weight after starting his day with a 9-7 sudden victory win against Penn State's Karl Shindledecker. After an 8-1 decision put him into the quarterfinals, he dropped a pair of hard-fought 4-3 and 4-2 matches to finish fourth. Leiphart started his tournament with back-to-back technical falls before a narrow 4-3 loss to No. 23 Stevo Poulin of Northern Colorado. Leiphart bounced back with a second period fall and a win against teammate Jack Bruce before falling in the fifth place bout. Bruce defeated a pair of Penn State wrestlers in Marco Vespa (won by fall) and Shindledecker before running into his teammate in the wrestlebacks.

James Conway was just one match away from placing at 184 lbs. He only lost to Penn State's Donovon Ball, but did so in the Round of 32 and in the consolation semifinals. Between those results the sophomore did roll to three consecutive wins. Noah Fox earned an EIWA victory against Cornell's Luke Gorg by a 7-5 score to help him place in the top 12 at 174 lbs. Other winners for the Diplomats included John Crawford who secured a 9-4 EIWA victory over Bucknell's Nolan Springer at 197 lbs. First-years Bryce Kresho (141 lbs.), Nick Alvarez (157 lbs.), and RJ Moore (165 lbs.) additionally notched victories throughout the day. Kresho earned a fall during his win, while Alvarez used a 15-0 score to record a tech fall against Bucknell's Miles Bassett during his matchup of EIWA foes.

Wrestling will have almost a full week of preparation before seeing action in two tournaments next weekend. The squad will split its wrestlers a week from now with entrants at both Millersville's "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic on Saturday, November 19 and Penn's Keystone Classic on Sunday, November 20.
