Wrestling Racks Up Bonus Points in 33-9 Victory at Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall wrestling team won eight bouts on Wednesday night during its first dual of the season, a 33-9 victory over Elizabethtown. The Diplomats (1-0) recorded bonus points during five of those eight victories.

Four Diplomats made their collegiate dual debuts, including at 125 lbs. where first-year Eli Wallace used an escape, takedown, and third period rideout to force overtime before falling 10-8 in the two-minute sudden victory. Franklin & Marshall took the lead for good with another first-year in Pat Phillips at 133 lbs. Phillips racked up four takedowns and numerous back points during a 17-2 tech fall in 6:10. That proved to be a sign of things to come as the Diplomats won eight consecutive matches.

Nick Tewell made his junior season debut against the Blue Jays and posted an 8-2 decision before senior Wil Gil also made his season debut. Gil showed himself worthy of the preseason recognition on Wednesday as he scored four takedowns during the first two periods before putting the finishing touches on an 18-3 tech fall with back points during the third. Fellow senior Chase McCollum kept the bonus points coming at 157 lbs. as he posted a 10-0 shutout victory to give the Diplomats a 17-3 lead at the midway point.

Starting out the second half of the dual, Crew Fullerton went feet to back for four points during the opening period moments of his match and iced his 8-4 decision with a takedown in the final seconds of the third. Franklin & Marshall clinched the dual victory at 174 lbs. when Noah Fox ran his season record to 6-1 with a relentless 16-2 major decision. With the team score locked up, first-year James Conway needed just 1:37 in his dual debut to pick up the fall at 184 lbs. Senior Mike Waszen capped the night at 197 lbs. with an 8-3 victory before the Diplomats forfeited the heavyweight bout in the 33-9 final.

The match against Elizabethtown marked Franklin & Marshall's lone dual during the month of November. The Diplomats will return to tournament action this Sunday when they travel to Binghamton for the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open.
