First-Years Shine for Men's Tennis at Swarthmore Invitational

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall men's tennis team begin its fall season over the weekend at the Swarthmore Fall Invitational. Opening the year against perennial region powers Swarthmore and TCNJ, the Diplomats engaged in individual matchups and came away with four wins in singles and three more in doubles.

Zac Ashtiani, Cooper Knutson, and Pedro Norte all won their only singles matches of the day. Ashtiani and Knutson – both first-years making their collegiate debuts – won their matchups against Centennial Conference foe Swarthmore. Knutson won his match against Kevin Jiang in straight sets. Ashtiani lost his opening set, but evened the match with a 6-4 second set in his favor before prevailing by a 10-7 score in the third set tiebreak.

Norte also needed a 10-point tiebreak to claim his win against TCNJ. His first two sets went by identical 2-6 and 6-4 scores before the junior emerged with a 10-8 tiebreak victory. Daniel Feigelson also earned a victory against TCNJ, defeating his opponent by identical 6-3 scores in straight sets.

During doubles play, the pairings of Gonzalo Gentou/Isaac Rockower and Tommy Hicks/Tommy Villiotte both won their lone matches on the afternoon. The first-year/senior pairing of Gentou/Rockower used a 7-5 tiebreak in their favor to claim the win after evenly splitting the first 14 games of the match. The all first-year team of Hicks and Villiotte pulled out a hard-fought 8-6 match. The Diplomats' third win in doubles came from the pairing of Daniel Feigelson and Zac Ashtiani, as that pairing also came away with a tiebreak victory against TCNJ.

Men's tennis will now set its sights on the 2022 ITA Southeast Regional Championship which will run from Friday, September 30 through Sunday, October 2. Mary Washington will once again serve as the host of this year's regional championship.
