
LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall men's swimming team defeated Gettysburg, 146-116, in Centennial Conference action on Friday night. The Diplomats (3-1, 3-1 CC) won eight of the 14 races, with six individual winners in addition to sweeping both relays. Franklin & Marshall additionally swept the top two positions in five individual events and the 200 Free Relay to cap a strong performance.
Patrick Rooney won a pair of individual events, capturing the 50 (27.67) and 100 Breaststroke (1:00.27) events. The first-year is currently ranked first in the 50 and second in the 100 among Centennial Conference swimmers. The Diplomats made it 1-2 finishes in both of those events, with Ben Lockey taking second in the 50 (27.86) and Cameron Mehta (1:00.46) taking second at the 100 yard distance.
The Diplomats were very strong in the freestyle events as Matt Hopkins (21.39), Lockey (48.29), and Henry Tavens (1:46.87) hit the touch pads first during the 50, 100, and 200 races. Hopkins was also a part of both the 200 (1:25.73) and 400 Free (3:31.6) winning relays. John Devaney was also on both relays, with Matt Hurford and Lockey competing in the 200 and Rooney and Willertz taking part in the 400. Willertz was also victorious individually during the 50 Fly (23.70). The Diplomats currently lead the Centennial Conference with the best time in the 200 Free Relay.
Adding to their advantage in the freestyle races, it was a 1-2-3 finish with Tavens (48.66) and Hurford (49.89) taking second and third in the 100 Free behind Lockey. Devaney (21.56) and Hurford (1:47.75) took second behind their teammates at the respective 50 and 200 distances. The Diplomats finished the night by having the top two relays in the 200 Free.
Men's swimming will continue its stretch of home meets with its first taste of non-conference action next Friday when the Diplomats welcome York and Mary Washington to the Kunkel Aquatic Center.
