LANCASTER, Pa. – The No. 7 Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team was defeated by No. 14 Cortland State 3-3 (7-6 PK) in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Down 3-2 in the 89th minute of the match, F&M drew a foul in the defensive area to set up a free kick from Nathan Schlessinger in hopes of switching sides of the field. The Diplomats loaded up the offensive area just outside the box to receive Schlessinger's entry pass. Koa Kaliebe headed the ball to Philip Monos, who sent a shot into the bottom-left corner of the net to force the game into overtime tied at 3-3.
The Diplomats took an early lead after an own-goal by Cortland State in the 36th minute. F&M went up 2-0 on Sean Lipschutz' first career goal, just four minutes later. Shay Adamson was credited with his fourth assist of the season as he beat the defender to the ball to find Lipshutz with space in front of the net.
Cortland State responded to Lipshutz' goal with scores in the 46th, 70th, and 79th minutes of the game to take a 3-2 advantage.
F&M tallied 13 shot attempts with nine on goal in the game.
Franklin & Marshall ends its season with an overall record 13-2-5 and finished 7-0-2 against Centennial Conference opponents. This season saw the Diplomats reach a peak ranking of seventh in the national polls to reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season.
