FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Shane Lawler took home medalist honors to lead the Franklin & Marshall men's golf team to a second place team finish at the George Cangero Invitational over the weekend. The event - hosted on the Bethpage State Park Red Course - was a two-day, 36-hole event that saw the Diplomats finish with a combined team score of 571.
St. Thomas Aquinas passed the Diplomats on the final day of the tournament, but the Diplomats did defeat an NYU squad by five strokes that came into the event ranked No. 16 in the country. The Diplomats are currently receiving votes in that same poll.
Lawler secured first place in the individual standings after being the only player to go under par during both rounds of the two-day event. He fired a 69 on Saturday and finished with 10 birdies over the two rounds. That combined four-under score was two strokes better that Djaia Darrason of St. Thomas Aquinas for the top spot. Lawler earns medalist honors for the second time in his career after also winning the Gino Biondi Tournament last fall during his rookie campaign.
Jas Fuhrer finished the tournament at three-over after going under par on Saturday. The Diplomats' senior captain finished in seventh place for the tournament after turning in a card of 73 on the par-70 course on Sunday. First-year Dylan Gallagher finished in a tie for 13th, carding a 76 on Sunday to finish at six-over for the tournament. Michael Gallagher trimmed three strokes off his first round score to finish at nine-over, while first-year Jack Cooley was 10-over in his collegiate debut after turning in a score of 76 on Sunday.
After a strong start to the fall season, the Diplomats will return to competition next weekend when they take part in the Wilson College Invitational held at the Greencastle Country Club. That two-day event will run from Sunday, September 25 through Monday, September 26.
