WESTMINISTER, Md. – Solomon Mathis scored 21 points to lead Franklin & Marshall to a 70-58 victory over McDaniel Thursday evening. The Diplomats improved to 8-12, 4-9 CC, while the Green Terror dropped to 5-15, 1-12 CC.
McDaniel took an early 12-4 lead seven minutes into the game, before F&M outscored the Green Terror 10-5 over the next seven minutes to come within three, 17-14, at 7:28. A 7-3 run by McDaniel made it 24-17, with under four minutes to play and the teams exchanged points the remainder of the half with McDaniel leading 26-20 at the break.
Five straight by McDaniel to open the second put the host up 11, 31-20, but F&M counter with a 10-2 run to come within three, 33-30, at 15:25. The Green Terror went ahead five, 38-33, two minutes later and held a 47-40 advantage at the midway point.
Two threes from Mathis led F&M on a 9-0 run that put F&M ahead 49-47. The Green Terror tied the game at 49-49 and a 12-4 spurt put the Diplomats ahead for good when a Brian Hines layup at 3:57 made it 61-53. The Diplomats led by at least seven down the stretch and eventually went ahead double-digits to secure the win.
Solomon Mathis scored a game-high with 21 points off the bench hitting 7-of-10 from floor, including 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Brian Hines ended with 14 points, going a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor, while Ignas Slyka finished with 10 for the Diplomats.
The Diplomats outshot McDaniel 59%-47%, but the Green Terror held a 27-16 edge on the glass.
F&M travels to Swarthmore on Saturday for 3:00 p.m. tipoff.
