McCabe Posts B-Cut Mark in 100-Back

LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall's Brittany McCabe posted an NCAA B-Cut time of 59.30 in the 100-yard backstroke to highlight the Diplomats' effort on the first day of its own invitational. It was McCabe's second time finishing a race in second place, leading F&M to second place amongst the field of nine teams with one session remaining on Sunday.
The 100-yard back saw three NCAA B-Cut performances. St. Mary's (Md.) Brie McDowell posted a Division III B-Cut time of 58.54 in winning the race, while Kutztown's Jordan Shapiro logged a Division II B-Cut mark with her third place time of 59.74.
McCabe's other second place finish came in the morning session, when she swam to a 25.06 to finish second in the 50-yard freestyle. She was the top Division III finisher in the race, touching .10 seconds behind Shapiro.
McCabe joined Samantha Sweeney, Laura Bassford and Meghan Karanian for a 4:08.57 in the 400-yard medley relay. The Diplomats' foursome finished approximately seven seconds behind the winning pace set by Kutztown when the Golden Bears raced to a 4:01.85.
That was F&M's second third place finish in a relay during the morning session. McCabe and Karanian swam with Katherine DeCrosta and Jennie Payne for a 1:42.15. St. Mary's entry took the event with a 1:40.02, followed by Kutztown at 1:41.78.
Garland Bartlett, Olivia Hill, DeCrosta and Karanian combined for second place points in the 800-yard free relay. The Diplomats logged the top Division III time in the race, an 8:17.18, finishing 11.05 seconds behind the first place foursome from Kutztown.
DeCrosta, Payne, McCabe and Sweeny added a third third place finish in a relay in the first event of the evening session. The group combined for a 1:53.83, slightly more than three seconds over the pace set by Kutztown at 1:50.55.
Bassford took third place in the 400-yard individual medley with a 4:51.60, making her the top Division III finisher. Kutztown swept the first two spots in the race. Sweeney contributed fifth place points in the event.
Hill and Bartlett contributed a combined 23 points taking seventh and eighth place respectively in the 500-yard freestyle. Emily Zacherl added another seven points in the race with a tenth place finish.
The Diplomats return to the pool Sunday morning for the third and final session of the 2008 F&M Invitational.
