Second Half Surge Lifts No. 11 F&M Over Dickinson

LANCASTER, Pa. – Four goals in the second half, including a hat-trick from Erin Coverdale, propelled No. 11 Franklin & Marshall field hockey to a 4-0 victory over Dickinson on Wednesday evening at Tylus Field.

The Diplomats improved to 6-1, 1-1 CC while the Red Devils dropped to 2-5, 1-1 CC. 

After a scoreless first half, the Diplomats finally broke through just six minutes into the second frame with Emma Durantine driving the ball up the middle of the field and dishing the ball into the circle. Katie O'Loughlin delivered the chip pass to Coverdale who slid the ball into the right side of the cage to put F&M on the board.

Coverdale struck again just one minute later after Emily Nagle placed a penalty corner to Coverdale who sent a quick give-and-go to Melissa Gula to give F&M the 2-0 lead in the 41st minute.

Lily Mynott notched her second goal of the season, tipping the insert from Gula after an F&M penalty corner in the 54th minute to extend the lead to three.

Coverdale completed the hat-trick in the 59th minute after Colleen Francis hit a long pass into the circle. O'Loughlin was able to slide the ball to Coverdale who chipped it over the goalie in the top right corner of the cage.

F&M outshot the Red Devils 18-3 and held a 12-2 edge in penalty corners. Coverdale led with two goals on the night off seven shots while O'Loughlin and Gula both nabbed two assists.

Ilianna Santangelo (6-1) tallied her sixth shutout of the season with two saves on the night while Heather Meeder (2-5) took the loss after turning away six shots.

The Diplomats travel to Haverford on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. contest.
