Diplomats Fall to Fords

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Juliana Morgan-Trostle's late second half goal led Haverford to a 1-0 victory over Franklin & Marshall in the first round of the Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey playoffs Wednesday evening. The loss ends the 2009 season for the Diplomats, finishing at 10-8. The Fords (9-9) will face Ursinus on Saturday in the semifinals.
Both defenses played strong all game, but it was the Fords who came out of top. Mary Hobbs broke through the Diplomat defense in the 62nd minute and found Morgan-Trostle free in the back post. Morgan-Trostle gathered the pass and found the back left corner of the net for the game-winner.
Eileen O'Reilly led all players with five shots. The Fords held an 11-9 advantage in shots, while each team earned four penalty corners.
Naomi Stone collected three saves for the Diplomats. Stone falls to 8-6. Maggie Cronin picked up six saves for the Fords, earning the shutout.
The other semifinal game between 14th-ranked Gettysburg and 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins will begin at approximately 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The championship game is Sunday at 1 p.m. in Collegeville.
