Diplomats Rally to Upset #17 Jays

Sep 2, 2009

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - After falling behind 2-0 early, Franklin & Marshall's field hockey team rallied for a 3-2 win, upsetting #17 Elizabethtown in the season opener for both teams. Allison McLaren scored a pair for F&M, including the game-winner.

The Blue Jays (0-1) got on the board 7:17 in and then scored again seven minutes later to get a 2-0 jump on the Diplomats (1-0).  McLaren answered 32 seconds after the Jays' second tally, getting beyond the Elizabethtown defense to beat Liz Hannegan. McLaren netted the game winner 13:05 into the second period on one of six F&M penalty corners in the half. Chelsey Talhelm fired Allison Bauer's insertion towards the Jays' cage and watched while McLaren redirected the shot into the net for the go-ahead goal.

McLaren's goal broke the 2-2 tie, arrived at with 1:22 left in the first half. That's when Paulette Cutruzzula directed a ball into the circle for Eileen O'Reilly to fire it home. Hannegan was under duress throughout, facing 13 F&M shots. She stopped six. At the other end, Naomi Stone turned away three of Elizabethtown's seven shots, two in the second half.

The Diplomats' victory marks the first over a ranked opponent since F&M knocked off #17 Lynchburg last September. F&M returns to action on Saturday for the home opener against Eastern.
