Diplomats Suffer Setback in Season Opener
Nov 1, 2008BALTIMORE – Johns Hopkins managed to take the first nine races, swimming to a 148-108 win over Franklin & Marshall in the Diplomats’ season opener on Saturday.
Tom Grabiak grabbed F&M’s first first-place points of the meet in the tenth men’s race, the 100-yard breaststroke. Grabiak recorded a 1:03.71 to eek out a .06 second victory over Hopkins’ Chris Razavi. It was F&M’s only win before Hopkins moved its entries into exhibition lanes.
Grabiak earned second place points in a tight 50-yard breaststroke. Nico Gimenez swam a 28.56 for Hopkins, while Grabiak touched at 29.19.
Peter Fishler placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.75, a little over a second off of the pace established by the Jays’ Alex Hsieh who swam a 1:48.54. Fishler also placed second in the 100-yard freestyle with a 50.09, followed by F&M freshman, Matt Woods at 50.83. John Thomas set the winning standard at 48.74.
The win was the first of the season for the Jays, which opened the season with close losses to Navy and Maryland.
The Diplomats return to action next Saturday for the home-opener. F&M will host The College of New Jersey.
