Diplomats Battle #11 Hopkins to a Draw
Oct 24, 2009
LANCASTER, Pa. - For the second year in a row 110 minutes of action failed to produce a winner as Franklin & Marshall battled #11 Johns Hopkins to a 1-1 draw in a Centennial Conference (CC) men's soccer game. This marks the fifth straight time the two teams have gone into overtime and the fourth time they have tied in a series dating back to 1993.
Johns Hopkins (12-2-2, 5-1-1 CC) struck first, scoring just under five minutes into the game when F&M keeper Zach Zamek came out of goal to defend a shot and Max Venker snuck a pass behind him to Scott Bukoski who found the back of the net.
Shawn Ganow tied the game in the 37th minute when he collected a corner from Matt Melino and put the ball in the upper right corner of the net. That was all the scoring fans would see at Tylus field as the teams played through two scoreless overtimes.
The Blue Jays outshot F&M 32-15 and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Zamek played lights out defense, coming up big multiple times. He collected eight saves, bringing his record to 8-5-2. Hopkins' keeper Ravi Gill was equally impressive as he also stopped eight shots.
F&M's seniors were recognized before the game. Seniors Lane Bodian, Geoff Dreher, Eric Corsini, Matt Melino, Neal Siegrist, Andrew DeMaio, Tom DeMaio and Eric Noto play their last regular season game in Lancaster.
Franklin & Marshall returns to the field on October 28th when the Diplomats travel to Ursinus.
