LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall's men's golf team captured their second Centennial Conference (CC) championship in three years and third overall on Sunday. The Diplomats shot a 54-hole total of 939, giving the champions a 12-stroke edge over second place McDaniel.
The Diplomats had two players finish in the top five, with the scoring four all finishing in the top 12. Andrew Woods shot 230 over three rounds. He finished the tournament 14 shots over par and three shots behind the Conference's individual medalist, Tucker Joyce of Dickinson. Joyce owned a two stroke lead entering Sunday's final round. He became only the third freshman to win the individual medalist honor in the 16 years of Centennial competition.
F&M freshman, Danny Liebowitz, finished in fifth place, with a 235 (+19). He saved his best round for Sunday, carding a 75, the lowest round of the final day. Liebowitz and Woods were both named All-Centennial Conference.
Bryan Hartog and Cameron Warner each shot a three-round score of 241 (+25) to finish in a six-way tie for 12th place.
The Diplomats previously won the Centennial championship in 2003 and 2007. The 12-stroke win matches F&M's largest margin of victory in the Centennial Championships. The 2003 team held 12 strokes on Muhlenberg.
F&M has now won eight Conference Championships between its days in the Middle Atlantic and Centennial Conferences. The 2009 NCAA Tournament will mark F&M's sixth appearance. The Championship will be played out at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, May 13-16.
