F&M Field Hockey; Lax Captain Tapped to Head SEC
Dec 18, 2008
LANCASTER, Pa. – Before Mary Schapiro ’77 was tapped by President-Elect, Barack Obama, to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission, Franklin & Marshall’s field hockey and lacrosse coaches saw fit to make the former Diplomat team captain.
Schapiro was a member of Franklin & Marshall’s first Varsity field hockey team when the sport jumped from club to Varsity status. She earned three letters and captained the 1975 and 1976 teams under the direction of head coach Ruth Wenger. The 1976 team finished the season with a record of 14-3-2.
She was also F&M’s first Varsity lacrosse captain as a senior. After several seasons of club status, the 1977 Diplomats were a 7-4 varsity squad under the direction of Martha Swope.
"Schapiro's appointment is the perfect example of transporting leadership skills from the fields and courts into the real world," said F&M Director of Athletics and Recreation, Patricia S.W. Epps. "She is a role model our current student-athletes would do well to emulate."
Schapiro majored in anthropology while at F&M. She earned a law degree from George Washington University in 1980.
Schapiro is a member of the Franklin & Marshall College Board of Trustees.
